How to Clean Anything In Your Home

!±8± How to Clean Anything In Your Home

With all the gadgets, chemicals, and doo-dads on television and in the cleaning aisle at the store, cleaning can get overwhelming. But if you really want to learn how to clean anything, here are some basic tools you should have. Remember, our great-grandmothers didn't have any of these modern "necessities," and most of their homes were cleaner than ours!

Chemicals - You'll be able to clean just about anything if you just keep some basic liquid cleansers and chemicals around. Let's start with ammonia. Do you want clean clarity? Ammonia is a good choice to use for cleaning solutions. Ammonia is wonderful stuff when you mix it up with water to clean your glass, stainless steel, and tile or linoleum floors.

Another acidic liquid you'll want to keep around is lemon juice, which can help bring the shine back to dull items. To kill mildew and mold, as well as to lift stains from white objects, bleach is an absolute necessity.

However, always remember that ammonia and bleach are mortal enemies! The combination of the two creates fumes that are deadly! Never try it! To tackle the really challenging cleaning jobs, use cream of tartar and salt. You probably already have them stocked in your spice cabinet. With these items on hand, you'll be prepared for how to clean anything.

Large tools - A good broom and dust pan, a dust mop or Swiffer, and probably a vacuum. All three are considered necessities in many households, depending on the types of floors.

A bucket and mop are preferred by many people for their tile and linoleum flooring, as well. Got dusty ceiling fan blades and cobwebs hanging in the corners of your ceiling? You'll want a long-handled duster for these jobs.

Small tools - Rags, sponges, and two microfiber cloths are the staples for your small cleaning tools. Great rags can be made from old cloth diapers, and men's undershirts. Sponges should be replaced on a regular basis, as they can hold germs. There are two varieties if microfiber cloths.

Nubby or napped, the first kind of cloth is mostly used for dust and general household cleaning. The second is smooth, meant for delicate surfaces like electronic screens. If you don't like the idea of touching filthy things with your bare hands or damaging your skin with chemicals, wear rubber gloves.

Tips on How to Eliminate Dust in Your Home

!±8± Tips on How to Eliminate Dust in Your Home

Dust. What an annoying part of life. It settles into every nook and cranny of your home and makes it look bad. Worse, it just makes life miserable for people with allergies. Plus, you have to spend precious time every week or so getting rid it. Wouldn't it be great if dust didn't even exist? Well, we can't make it go away completely but there are steps you can take to minimize the amount of dust in your home.

1. Minimize how many times windows and doors are opened. Opening access points to your home increases the amount of dirt that comes into your home. By keeping windows closed when practicable you can reduce the amount of dust in the home.

2. Vacuum your home at least once a week. Dust and dirt in your carpet eventually works its way into the air to settle on your furniture. Vacuuming is an easy way to get rid of the dirt before it becomes dust.

3. Get rid of your carpet. Vacuuming is helpful but it will never remove all the dirt and dust that carpet holds. It is simply amazing how much dirt is "permanently" inside of carpet. In fact, all the dust and dirt in the carpet for a normal size room would, if piled together, create a mound an inch or so high. Even when you think your carpet is clean, it isn't. In fact, many allergy sufferers simply can't have carpet in their home for this reason. Replacing your carpet with hardwood or tile will greatly reduce amount of dust in your home.

4. Change your furnace filter. Your furnace filter has the job of removing dust floating around in the air. However, if you don't change it periodically, its effectiveness decreases and the dust is left to settle onto your favorite antique hutch. Plus, changing the filter helps your furnace last longer.

5. Change bedding weekly. This one makes many people cringe. One of dust's primary components are dead skin cells. Humans are constantly shedding skin cells and areas where we spend lots of time have high concentrations of these cells. And your bed would be one of these places. Gently roll the sheets up when changing them to prevent the cells from escaping into the air.

6. When dusting, use a tool that captures the dust. Feather dusters and dry clothes don't eliminate dust they simply move it around. Instead use something that captures the dust like a Swiffer or use polish on a cloth.

Yes, dust will always be with us but with a little thought we can make managing our dust problem just a bit more bearable. Hopefully, these tips will keep your home looking its best all the time!

5 Ways to Squeeze Housework Into Your Day When You Work From Home

!±8± 5 Ways to Squeeze Housework Into Your Day When You Work From Home

If you're anything like me, working from home has almost made it harder to tackle all of those household chores than it was when I was commuting. Here are some ways I've worked housework into my day.

Enlist your spouse/roommate/kids to help. Whether they're starting the dishwasher so you can unload it later or switching the laundry from the washer to the dryer, having someone else pitch in with part of the task helps you get more done. Break tasks down into smaller chunks. Chances are, you don't have a solid two-hour block to play Suzy Homemaker. So use the time you do have to whittle away at what needs to get done. You don't have to clean the whole living room in one shot. Take a few minutes here to take everything that doesn't belong there to the room where it does belong. Take a few minutes there to dust your surfaces. Take another few minutes to vacuum. Try not to make things harder for yourself throughout the day. Clean up your little messes along the way. Sort the mail over the trash can so you're not accumulating junk mail. Take your dishes to the sink after you work through lunch (which you shouldn't do, by the way). Use mid-day breaks to cross things off your to-do list. Especially if you're sitting in front of the computer all day, you need to take some breaks throughout the day to get your blood moving and give your eyes a chance to focus on something else. Use that time to vacuum one room, fold one basket of laundry, or sweep the porch. 4 breaks = 60 minutes of housework! Take advantage of tools that make your life easier. I save real mopping for every other month or so and keep up with the floors by using my beloved Swiffer. I also use the Swiffer duster rather than busting out the dust cloth and oil every time I want to make the furniture look nice. They're huge time savers, and they're great for ongoing maintenance.

Unless you can afford to hire help, housework is never going to go away. But by using these 5 tips, you can at least make it a little easier.
